Brilliant event, and I remember felling what a big loss it was to the development of snooker that it was only staged once. But if Barry Hearn couldn't make it profitable, then I guess it was a bad idea, or at least needed tweaking.

Would a similar event be successful in 2008? What with all the awareness of snooker that Eurosport is generating? Fingers crossed someone dares to make it happen.

If it did happen, I'd like to see:

-the 9-ball pool playing "Fishers" back at the snooker table, along with Karen Corr and maybe a few others
-Higgins and Maguire as a team, although I think Maguire and Hendry would be more likely to team up
-a return to the roll-on, roll-off system (no intervals, even in best of 19's- just a break every 5 frames, if I remember right)
-a proper international flavour, something that's lacking at every event. The Chapeus and Castanedas of the day had little to offer in terms of title winning credentials, but all of these new faces added to the eventAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-29605452.post-25097705995655540192008-07-01T20:54:00.000+01:002008-07-01T20:54:00.000+01:00Easy to dream, but fact is that thewhole shebang w...Easy to dream, but fact is that the
whole shebang went 4 mill£ in the red.
Mr.Hearn probably lost some too as
Mita and Black&Decker (the main sponsors) surely did.
It was shown massively in Sweden
10 hrs for 14 days, or the other way around but it was to big all
over.
Doubles are no fantastic idea,there
are only one really interesting extra tournament!

It was tried the one and only time
1996, national team worldchampionships with full qualifications and some sponsorship from WSA for small countries for gas and lodging.
Our qualification were in Antwerpen.
Sweden played in a group with Iceland, Polen and denmark, we lost
the decisive match against Iceland
who got free flights,lodging and
alloawences in Bangkok, where the
main tournament were held.
It was round robin, five teams in each group, nr. 5 team got 6000£
for the bother!!
That is a tournament that would do
very well in eurosport and asia and
presumably also in UK.
There are a lot of prestige and great bonding in such an event.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-29605452.post-60147307990402340242008-07-01T16:47:00.000+01:002008-07-01T16:47:00.000+01:00Doubles Partners:O'Sullivan and EbdonDott and McCu...Doubles Partners:

O'Sullivan and Ebdon
Dott and McCulloch
Murphy and Maguire
Steve Davis and Alex Higgins

Just a bit of fun obviously... :o)

Andyandyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14040711881348024153noreply@blogger.com
