One to the street fighter.

Davis v White in '87 was another 'classic' that Jimmy fell just short of.

Mountjoy's swan song victory against Hendry in '88 was equalled only by his magnanimous and generous praise of Hendry during his acceptance speech. A very classy gesture and a very accurate prediction.

Snooker has much to be proud of.Graemenoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-29605452.post-46371314122620149502011-11-26T17:14:31.135+00:002011-11-26T17:14:31.135+00:00Although the UK is still with us today and is stil...Although the UK is still with us today and is still a Major championship the single biggest mistake any governing body in snooker has made was reduce the final from a best of 31 in 1993 even bigger than the Best of 11 of this year.

as a kid for me the UK Was the Winter World Championship something different to the norm then during the 90s it became very much the same as any other event and culminating in the format this year.

reduction might be done with the best of intensions but you might aswell say it killed the UK as a true MAJOR.wildnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-29605452.post-87045894761587427582011-11-25T20:00:38.191+00:002011-11-25T20:00:38.191+00:00This is a great series of articles.
Alex Higgins ...This is a great series of articles.

Alex Higgins had a very impressive run in the UK for a period of time:

1977: semi-final, 1978: semi-final; 1979: quarter-final; 1980: final; 1981: quarter-final; 1982: final; 1983: winner; 1984: final; 1985: last-16; 1986: semi-final; 1987: last-16; 1988: last-32; 1989: last-32

Not close to Davis' achievements, but probably second best over that era in terms of number of matches won, at least until his natural ability slipped away.

Certain players play their best over long matches and it's a shame that these better tests of ability are fewer these days.Dr Tim Sandlehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08974330541299546404noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-29605452.post-42551688989945637182011-11-25T15:09:41.061+00:002011-11-25T15:09:41.061+00:00Excellent piece Dave and a very good summation of ...Excellent piece Dave and a very good summation of Higgins and Davis.
Two of the most incredible changes of character and persona in any walk of life (let alone sport) must be Steve Davis and boxer George Foreman. They are unrecognisable now to how they were at the height of their powers - like 2 different people.
Incidentally it's a disgrace that the 83 and 88 UK Championship Finals are not available on dvd. They were 2 of the most iconic finals in the history of snooker. What a crying shame.Raynoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-29605452.post-86364537583822913852011-11-25T12:49:14.082+00:002011-11-25T12:49:14.082+00:00Good article! :)
