Although this may be statisically true, I'm not sure that this break off is as crazy as you make it sound.

At a pro-am just after Hann broke off like this at Telford, a few of us spent about an hour on a match table trying various power break offs. We potted a red about one in three times by going straight into the pack. But interestingly what was more successfull from a match perspective was going in hard off the top cushion with side. The chances of potting a red went down to about one in four, but the cue ball tended to arc back off the pack and ofetn leave an easy black if a red did go in. If a red didn't go in, it was uncanny how often your opponent wouldn't be left an easy opener.

Of course I'm not saying that the regular conservative three cushion break off is not the best option. (Though interestingly a six time world champion has recently concluded it isn't!) but what might be an interesting Phd topic for a a snooker physicist/mathematician would be a proper risk reward analysis of various break-off options. I just wonder if records are currently kept of breakoffs to win ratios in all pro matches. It is accepted pratice that if you win the toss, you break but is this statistically justified?

People trying new things in sport are often initially derided (Dick Fosbury in the high jump, Richard Hadlee off a short run, Sam Torrance with the long putter). Just because someone trys something radically different and counter to perceived wisdom doesn't automatically mean they are wrong.

John (Cumbria)Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-29605452.post-44717971663496797242008-11-07T13:25:00.000+00:002008-11-07T13:25:00.000+00:00I loved it when he used to smash the reds open for...I loved it when he used to smash the reds open for his break off!!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
