DOWN TO THE SEMIS

Now we’re down to the semi-finals of the 888.com World Championship, let’s look back at my tips for the last four.

I went for:

Ding Junhui v Mark Williams
Shaun Murphy v Neil Robertson

Oh dear.

Still, I’d be amazed if anyone tipped Ali Carter v Joe Perry.

Carter reminds me a little of Joe Johnson, who found inspiration in 1986 to play some remarkable snooker and go all the way to the title.

Everyone seems to be saying that the winner of the O’Sullivan-Hendry semi will land the title.

Carter, though, is growing in confidence and could yet pull off what would be a huge upset.

I'd disagree slightly - I'd say Carter's opponent, Joe Perry, reminds me more of Johnson, simply because Carter has been touted as a potential top player for some time and was groomed as such by the WSA with their young players distinction programme, unless I'm mistaken.
That's not to mention his run to the quarter finals last year, and at the start of his career making an impact in the 1999 Grand Prix. To me, he's looked like a player who'd make it sooner rather than later.
Whereas Perry, despite being a good player, has had more of a journeyman career, in and out of the lower reaches of the top 16.
I'd be surprised if Carter loses this match to be honest.

It's funny you should mention that. When I was watching Liang Wenbo v Ronnie I was thinking how much Wenbo reminded me of Johnson. I hope we see more and more Chinese players doing well because I can see that attracting huge sponsorship from China in the future. I think the future is looking more promising than it's been in years. I just hope the WPBSA learn from past mistakes and can make the most of these new opportunities!

I've got to agree Sam, I think Joe Perry is the dark horse and think he'll reach the final. He was under real pressure against Maguire and stroked them in like it was the first frame.
