This tournament should not be billed as a world championship.

8 invited players play off for one place to join another 7 invited players.

To be considered a world championship, surely the tournament must be open to all pros, with seedings based on world rankings.

Are the matches being recorded?

No but the final stages will be on TV, or that was the original plan. Not sure if it will be affected by the EGM.

i agree with kildare joe johnson has selected his has- been 80 s mates and left out better players. to be called a true world championships it should be open to everyone.

What's the point in trying anything new in snooker?

All you get is slagged off by barely literate armchair 'experts'

In fairness a bit of cop on wouldn't go awry here.

What do you want them to call it? The Old Fogies Event? Sometimes ideas are marketed in this way so that it will give it a better chance of lifting it off the ground and being successful!

And I completely agree with 1:30pm's comment. everyone here is always complaining about how something needs to be done or the sport will die. Well change is upon us so instead of lambasting every new venture to it's very core maybe just support it, give it a chance and see how it goes.

Anyway Lines vs Bond, could that have gone any worse?

Yeah fair enough, I was probably a bit harsh in my criticism of the use of the word "world", in my earlier entry.

I know it has to be marketed and that, but its a pity its not open to all tour pros, and even amateurs, and seeded according to tour ranking and/or world championships.

It would clear the way for the tournament to become a competitive event with the winner receiving a title that matters, rather than a fun event.

I don't see any reason why these eight players were not forwarded to the main event in November. How come Darren Morgan is granted direct entry to the event, yet Nigel Bond who is in the top 40 in the world rankings was made to qualify?

Dave H said...

Darren Morgan hasn't been put through to the final stages. He was in the qualifiers originally but pulled out.

Didn't realise that, but the point about and Bond and his ranking is valid. I'm not knocking this event, just didn't see the need for qualifying.
