JOHN HIGGINS WITHDRAWS (UPDATED)

Despite winning this morning, John Higgins has withdrawn from the German Masters after learning his father's ill health worsened.

John Senior has sadly passed away today.

Family has always come first for Higgins. He walked out of the 2000 Grand Prix because of a date clash with his brother's wedding.

John Senior was too ill to travel to Telford to watch him win the UK Championship, having been told last September that his cancer was terminal.

It's worth remembering at times like these that snooker, though hugely important to many of us, is just a game.

Sad news indeed. Best wishes to the Higgins family.

If I was Higgins I would have withdrawn before the match so that at least Rob Milkman could play in the last 16. Slightly selfish from Johnny.

What an ignorant comment. John was informed AFTER the match that his father's condition had worsened. His father has now passed away.

Extremely sad news. Hope John and his family will be fine.

I hope Higgins is not affected by not being there at his dads bedside in his final moments

I hope he can win the World title for his dad, at least Higgins showed up for this event unlike certain other primadonna players

I think John Senior's situation is worsened suddenly, if not John won't be in Berlin for sure.

Its a scourge, that cancer, but at least John snr's suffering has ended, and the family can grieve and move on with their lives.

There is nothing worse than watching a family member deteriorating.

Certainly puts snooker into perspective.

Very very sad.
Higgins is a true legend from where I stand. One of the best comeback wins in history at the UK Championship, it was touching that he dedicated it to his dad.

The two had a very special bond.

With you in spirit John

Dave: I for one would appreciate you deleting the post as at 1.21. Regardless of free speech, it has no place here.

Just to correct my previous comment. I meant to say of course that I send my condolances, not "lend".
