SELBY PINCHES PTC TITLE

Mark Selby (pictured left with WPBSA Tournament Director Mike Ganley) came from 3-1 down to beat Barry Pinches 4-3 and win the second Players Tour Championship title of the season in Sheffield tonight.

Selby, the world no.9, won the opening frame but sat out breaks of 72, 79 and 95 as Pinches threatened an upset.

But Pinches scored only eight further points in the match and Selby finished off with back-to-back centuries of 133 and 116.

I'll be profiling Selby and his prospects this season tomorrow.

well played Mark and getting 2,000 Ranking points.

whats your thoughts on 2,000 points for the PTC and 7,000 points for the World Open that seems steep for the quick fire best of 5s compared to the PTC. and on top of that only 5,000 for the Welsh Open ?

    very confusing.

  2. The World Open is a BBC event, hence the higher tariff.

Pot Black was a BBC Event.

surely Difficulty of winning should be the only criteria for tour Logistics not what channel its on.

  4. First of all, what makes you think a best of 5 frame event is easier to win than best of 9? It's arguably harder because there's hardly any margin for error.

Second, the BBC want to drop from four events to three hence the Grand Prix has morphed into the World Open in an attemot to get them to change their minds. It may not be to the taste of diehard snooker fans but it at least means there are four events on the BBC.

Without the BBC this last decade, there wouldn't be a professional game as we know it now. It's not unreasonable that they want their events to be regarded as the majors and the tariffs reflect that wish.

come on how many Ranking Tournaments has Judd Trump won and yet hes won best of 5s championship league.

best of 5s opening up players to fluke pots win match more so than ever before in a ranking event.

im all for the World Open but not 7,000 for a win being the broadcaster of the masters suggests they not that interested in how many ranking points in a tournament.

they wanted to get rid of the grand prix. the World Open is a separate tournament from the grand prix and should not be treated as the Grand Prix.

  6. The Masters has been established as the game's premier invitation event since 1975 and would be devalued by having ranking points

The reason the World Open is a ranking event is so that all the top players enter it, otherwise the BBC would be disinclined to give it air time

yes Ranking Event but only a 1000 less than the UK Champion but the UK champion will have to win 26 more frames for that 1000 points more.

the welsh open champion will have to win 10 more frames for 2000 less points.

sorry does not make sense to me as i say yes give it ranking points yes give it more points than the PTC but keep it in proportion.

you cant compare the world open to a ptc event.

The ptc is part of a series of pro ams with no tv, audience or sponsor.

The world open is all of the above in an established slot on the calendar, and is therefore worthy of a higher tariff.

I do agree that the Welsh open is a bit low. It should be at least as high as the chinese tournaments.

Dave - Tennis has an end of season Masters event - which does carry ranking points - to be exact,
the tariff is 3/4 value of the Grand Slams - even though only
8 players are able to participate.

I don't think the Snooker Masters would be devalued if were to carry ranking points in future - The PTC Finals will carry points - even with just 24 players eligible to compete - which is a proxy/psuedo
    Masters format anyhow.

On the subject of World Open tariff
7,000 pts is perfectly fine by me.

i never said it was on a par with PTC in fact i think the PTC is a tougher tournament to win but that aside yes the World Open should have a higher tariff than the PTC but no way more than Wales for doing very very little if truth be told with a best of 9 final.

why do people continually compare snooker to what tennis (or other sport) does?

we are not tennis and its no use saying we could do that as thats what they do, as anyone could come on here and relate snooker to chess comps or curling.

we are snooker, we dont need to copy tennis!!!

  12. The longer frame events are harder to win as so few do. They sort the men from the boys so to speak. A best of five event is only harder to win as luck will play a greater part, but we want to see class rise to the top in the biggest events.

I do however support you on the high tariff being rewarded because it is on the BBC, but it shouldn't be higher than the Welsh Open.

Under the the old system of just
6 or 7 counting events towards the rankings - having the Masters with
    points tariffs would have been
    very unfair indeed.

    Now,with 20 counting events -
the players who don't make the
cutoff for the PTC Finals or the Masters - still have plenty of events to build up points & their
    ranking.

Basically - The new system with a packed calendar would make it much fairer to have pts tariffs
    for the Masters.

However, with or without that it's still a prestigous event anyway -
But it wouldn't be devalued either
IF it did have a tariff in future.

If anything - it would increase it's prestige slightly more !

  14. The Masters would be devalued by making it into just another ranking event. If you gave it points it would have to be open to every player instead of just the top 16.

Hearn has done away with the qualifying tournament and kept it for the elite: which is what the tournament was always supposed to be and what it should be.

    ReplyDelete
  15. So does that mean no wildcards then? As if it is just for the elite then surely the wildcards are not needed.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Wildcards were introduced in 1990 solely to get Alex Higgins in the event.

However, if someone wins a tournament and isn't in the top 16 - less likely now the rankings system has changed - they can be rewarded with a wildcard. It certainly isn't a must, though.

    ReplyDelete
  17. CHRISK56:16 pm

If they kept the 2 Wildcard places & a field of 18 players.

I would say Judd Trump & Zhang Anda should get them in 2011.

The wildcard was created for Alex Higgins & his protege Jimmy White has beneffited even more from this shallow favouritism.

So,Is the Masters reverting back to it's original format of just the Top 16 alone - with no more
    Wildcards ?

Lack of TV Coverage for the PTC is a let down at the moment.

is there any hope of getting live streaming ?
