POTS IT ALL ABOUT, ALFIE

Alfie Burden became the first player to win a match in the 2007/08 professional season when he beat Alex Davies 5-1 in the first qualifying round of the Shanghai Masters at Pontin's, Prestatyn today.

To be honest, I'm only mentioning this so I can use the headline.

and while we're talking about Burden, I shall point out that I remember being in the same club as him in Ibiza in 1998 when England lost to Argentina in the football world cup!

Can't believe he's still playing...thanks, Joe

Dave,

Any news on how Jimmy White performed in his 5-3 defeat to the above mentioned Burden?

The 'Whirlwind' seems to be Snooker's equivalent of Tim Henman. 'Am playing well in practice - but just can't get the breaks.'

5-3 isn't 5-0, so White obviously isn't giving his supporters food-for-thought of an impending retirement from the game. But, it is a another world ranking defeat.

Thanks, Joe

Jimmy had a century - 110 - but what a terrible start to the season

A century break! Which proves to me that he is still performing well enough. But he does need to get a few wins under his belt, otherwise, it could get really serious.

Didn't he lose this time last year at this stage in qualifying for the Northern Ireland Trophy, to Jimmy Mitchie? If so, things haven't change.

Thanks, Joe

I don't think White's safety or long potting is good enough nowadays to compete at the very top level, although all credit to him for battling on. It's hard to think it was only three years ago he won the Players Championship and was up to something like no.5 provisionally again.

Good points.

Just before he won the Player's Championship, he made his first final, since winning the UK in 1992, and got thrashed 9-2 by Maguire in the European Open.

It really is hard to explain how he has gone downhill so fast in performance and rankings.

Thanks, Joe

Just to note: I also meant other tournaments White has been involved in apart from the World Championship.

Dave, White has been confirmed as one of the players for the forthcoming Premier Snooker League. Any idea who the other wild cards are?

Thanks, Joe
