MAGIC MAGUIRE

A highly focused Stephen Maguire won the first group of this year's Championship League with a 3-0 defeat of Mark Selby at Crondon Park Golf Club, Essex tonight.

Maguire, making his debut in the event, was 2-0 down to Ali Carter in the semi-finals but produced back-to-back centuries of 140 and 101 and fought back to win 3-2.

He returns for the winners' group in March. Selby, Carter, Judd Trump and John Higgins return for group two tomorrow alongside Ronnie O'Sullivan, Neil Robertson and Marco Fu.

If you're wondering what happened to the O'Sullivan story I posted earlier, I had, while kneedeep in the CLS if not snow, not read the link properly. It didn't say he would use the purple cue at the Masters, only that he had been practising with it, and I have thus deleted it.

In other news, the players will have music playing as they are introduced at the Masters.

The powers that be read this blog so feel free to suggest what the various players should have as their tracks.

A good track for Ronnie O'Sullivan would be : Gareth Gates - Anyone of us.

How about this to start ronnie coming in to elton john's 'rocketman' thats deadly with or without purple cue in hand.

Will the players have some gorgeous woman accompanying them as well as some dancers? Snooker needs livening up.

Maybe the ref could call out when a player reaches a milestone break. Shouting something catchy like "that's the century!".

It all works in darts, so why not snooker?

Play whichever track was no. 1 in the charts when each player won their first professional or televised tournament.

"You're so Vain" seems fairly appropriate for Ronnie

Neil Robertson - cut some bits from Sweet Disposition? Temper Trap are from Melbourne. There's bursts of vocals in there that might work pretty well.

I think that the same songs should be used that are used in the Premier League. It's confusing to change it and Barry Haern wanted the songs to be a kind of distinctive feature. I like "20th centurie boy" and the other songs. So why take new songs? As for the players whom have never player in the PL: Let them chose their own song! It's a melody they'll have to live with a long time. So let them chose something they identify with.

Every play should come out to Norweigan Avant-Gard Black Metal

Mark 'The Jester' Selby - 'That joke isn't funny anymore' - The Smiths.

Mark 'The Pistol' Allen - I Shot the Sheriff.

Robbo - Madness 'Baggy Trousers' (or am I the only one that's noticed them) on that note, Shaun Murphy should dust off his spangly trousers and jive in to 'I love to boogie' by T-Rex.

Mark King - 'Rabbit' by Chas and Dave.

I like to think the powers that be read my idea for musical walk ons! To be fair Dave you could show them the list you did on it a few months back. As part of my degree I actually wrote an article on this, don't ask why. I'm chuffed to hear this as to mean it was always a no brainer. You say the powers that be, but wont the players be choosing their tracks anyway, but I imagine some read this blog.

Ronnie O'Sullivan could walk out to Can't Get No Satisfaction by Rolling Stones.

Marco Fu may not know but there is track by Ash called Kung Fu.

Peter Ebdon will probably choose I Am a Clown, but considering his playing style something fiery would be appropiate like Firestarter or perhaps Killing in the Name by Rage Against the Machine!

Ali Carter should check out the Idlewild back catalogue for a song called El Capitan.

Stephen Maguire- Fire by Arthur Lee

I imagine Stephen Hendry will choose something indie based like U2 or he may choose one of Radiohead's uplifting classics!

My favourite band of all time are the Manic Street Preachers and they have song called Australia so fitting for Neil Robertson especially if he loses as it contains the " I want to fly and run till it hurts, sleep for a while and speak no words in Australia"

John Higgins has said in the past he likes James Blunt, so if he strolls out to Your Beautiful then he surely has to be docked a frame for that violation of peoples ears!

Mark Allen is known as the pistol so perhaps a bit of Anarchy in the UK.

Back to the Manics their frontman James Dean Bradfield, released a solo album in 2006 called The Great Western it contained a track called English Gentleman so Joe Perry would be ideal for that.

wow some of these suggestions are really out there... Kyuss.. haven't heard of them in years.

however, having witnessed PDC darts, I think we're in for some pretty dire stuff, especially for the older players.

The World Series of Snooker have been walking the players on to music for ages. About time World Snooker caught up! Good on ya Mr Hearn!

You're Gorgeous by Babybird for Ronnie. LOL.

Oh dear!
I hope we are not going to be subjected to some more of that horrible modern thumping music!

I hope the MC's still read out a few stats about the players first. I imagine Rob Walker won't be MC on Sunday as he is at Lakeside making some shocking jokes.

Dave, do you think or even have any idea whether Ronnie's first round match at the Crucible would have sold out by now? I ask as me and a friend are sending our postal form next week and wondering whether to list it as one of our two choices. I thought though as they have been on sale for a while it may have sold out.

Don't know but he is obviously the most popular player so it's likely his tickets will go quickly

Yes, "The Power" by Snap!

Very modern. I wish I could be as hip as you, southerner.

Well, I've got no desire to be hip.
I can remember when music was proper music with nice tunes that sounded pleasant, and singers who didn't sound as though they were screeching in pain!
Those were the days!
