RONNIE'S DAD RELEASED

Ronnie O'Sullivan's father, Ronnie senior, has been released from prison for three days.

He has been serving a life sentence for murder since 1992 but has been out on day release and is spending time with his son and wife, Maria.

There are more details in today's London Evening Standard.

This is, of course, a private matter but it will be interesting to see what, if any, effect it has on Ronnie's performance at next week's Welsh Open.

With regards to the victim's family I'm sure that if they are disappointed it's because they have a strong emotional connection to the deceased. But the fact of that case was that O'Sullivan Sr. got such a tough sentence because he chose not to say a word. Of course you could rightly suggest that Ronnie is subjective in his book where he relays the events that took place that day but it seems that he was fighting for his life and that he was attacked AND that he is obviously not in any way racist. Now I just hope he will easily adjust to life as a free man and be a positive influence on Ronnie's game in the future.

Ronnie's book is one would assume ghost written; and puts a careful 'spin' on some incidents- the murder is one such event. His book states that his dad picked up a knife from the Chelsea nightclub bar to defend himself- whereas court reports state that O'Sullivan sr brought the knife with him when he went drinking for the night.
There is also a possible under current that has never been fully explored in any reports I have seen- O'Sullivan senior has been described, now and in 1992, as well known in the london underworld: a porn-baron etc. He stabbed two men one of whom is variously described as 1960s crime figure Charlie Kray's bodyguard and/or driver- it therefore begs the question was this as random as is usually described. Ronnie's book downplays the link and states that Kray signed one or other brother into the presumably members club that night.
