WILLIAMS BREAKS WRIST

A night on the tiles has left Mark Williams with a broken wrist and doubtful for next month's Shanghai Masters.

The tiles in question were on the floor in a room of his house in Ebbw Vale. The twice former world champion slipped on them last night.

Williams was today confirmed to have broken his right wrist. "I'm gutted. I told the doctors that I need to play in Shanghai in less than four weeks time, but right now it looks dodgy," the Welshman told global-snooker.com.

More details here.

Hi Dave,

If Williams doesn't pull through, who would be the replacement?

Would it be the 17th seed or other?

BTW, is there any news on whether 110sport are lining up a competition(s) (Scottish Masters?) for the newly launched pay-per-view website?

Thanks, Joe

Ouch,

Well, at least it was his right wrist (Being a left-hander). You would think it shouldn't affect him for quite as long as it would if he broke his playing hand.

celt.

Joe Swail will just get a bye into the last 16.

Announcements on the 110sport tournaments are imminent.

Dave,

I regularly have a wee look at the 110 sport website but no useful information is ever given. For example, they have launched a new tv website, which I would have known nothing about if I didn't read your blog. Why wouldn't 110 promote this new tv channel on their own website? Seems very strange to me. I remember years ago in the TSN era and the first 110 website was very good and informative, but now it has been allowed to slip big time.

I agree with celt, a storm in a teacup. I'd be shocked if he didn't turn up in Shanghai.

Come on Dave, how about a post on players that have played with injuries. The legendary Alex in a plaster must take top spot, didn't Hendry also once play with a broken arm?

Dear Dave
Mark Williams will find his game improving as pushing on his bridge hand to get up was one of his regular faults.
A tip to all betting men, grab the extra odds that will now be on offer as he now has a favourites chance. Mr hey you

Welcome back mr hey you, didn't realise you were a gambling man. With the insider knowledge you have of technique it must give you a big advantage. You must be a very rich man.

Highlight video of Parrott vs Michael White from Pontin's last week on http://www.110sport.tv for anyone interested. Just the final frame. Looks good.

9.24am

i could turn up in shanghai doesent meen i could play though.

regarding Alex that was a brilliant performance beating Les Dodd and taking 2 frames of Willie Thorne on 1 leg. but dont underestimate the difficulty Mark will have regarding bridging with a weak wrist after the plaster is removed and if it will be removed in time normally its 6 weeks he has less than 4 before shanghai.

Graeme Dott's break last season was to his bridging arm and he didn't play again for six weeks. Even when he did he hadn't been able to practice and lost out to Barry Pinches, so this is surely going to hinder Mark preparation even if he does make it out there.

On other players, I seem to remember hearing that Lee Spick hobbled around the table with a broken ankle during some of the qualifiers last season.

110sport website seems to be undergoing a revamp. Checked in there yesterday and they now have profiles of the people who work there and some additional company info. First big change to the site in several years, I think.

Leo Fernandez played with broken ankle.
Lee Spick had broken ankle for part of last season
Willie Thorne once broke both legs in a go-kart accident and claimed to make a 147 still, but not in a tournament.
Hendry played with a fractured elbow and won the world championship.
Dott of course had his wrist broken by Tom Ford in that footie match in Shanghai..
Bjorn Haneveer played last week with his broken shoulder pinned together.
Ian McCulloch also has a bad shoulder and surgery to "scrape" something where the bone has worn.
and there's the mounting Swine Flu casualty list too!

7 or 8 years ago Quinten Hann missed a number of events due to a motor bike accident or some such accident. Not sure if on his return his playing was still impaired by a cast or whatever.

Hann played in flip flops during what I think was a decent run in the 2000 UK championships. Can't remember if that was from the motorbike or some other accident.

Hi Dave,

Hamilton also had an injury in 2000, whilst chasing after a mugger in London.

Thanks, Joe

I feel silly now as 110 have sorted out their website. I would like to take some of the credit as after my comment a new much improved website appeared. Haha.

It's rubbish, the player profiles are a joke. If you don't believe me read Stephen Hendry's (he didn't turn pro in 1986/he hasn't had the most TV maximums/who is Matthew Holt/why is the profile five years old?).

They're going to have to do better to persuade people they're a professional outfit.

it must feel brilliant picking a few faults among lots and lots of information and moaning about it on a completely different website

Anonymous said...

It does actually.

Here's another: Ali Carter's biography doesn't mention the fact he won the Welsh Open (apart from in a list of 'career highlights' at the bottom).

Anonymous said...

maybe to you it does, but most, if they felt that upset at it would complain to that site and not get excited about pointing the errors out on here

It does say on the website as well I think it's under Ian Doyle that his main highlight is managing Stephen Hendry to 10 world titles. A bit to go for that 110!
