THE ART OF THE MATTER

This is a link to a painting done by Ronnie O'Sullivan.

And here is a link to one done by Stephen Hendry.

This one had input from a legion of world champions.

They were created using snooker cues as part of an exhibition by The Willow Foundation, which was set up by former Arsenal goalkeeper and TV sports presenter Bob Wilson and his wife.

'The Art of Sport' includes works by Sir Alex Ferguson, Thierry Henry, Joe Calzaghe and Ricky Hatton. Each sportsman has used apparatus to paint that they would ordinarily use in their sporting life.

The artworks can be viewed on the website I've linked to and close up at the Catto Gallery, Hamstead, London from September 25 to 27.

You can even buy originals or prints of the paintings. Proceeds go to the Willow Foundation, which provides special days for young adults suffering from serious illnesses. Wilson and his wife set it up after their daughter died of cancer at the age of 31.

I wonder if Ronnie received any tips from his friend Damien Hirst? Good for him and Stephen for taking part in a worthwhile enterprise.

I can't claim to have any insight into the art world, but I recall the words of Mr. Burns when presented with a picture of himself painted by Marge in The Simpsons:

"I'm not an art expert but I know what I hate and I don't hate this."

Good to see they can all think for themselves and come up with something different!

I know this is a little off point... but when did the PartyPoker Premier League become the PartyCasino League?! I only mention that it's a little off point as Phil Yates did mention the charity paintings during tonight's Premier League commentary... along with some really dodgy puns! Also, we had some great Willie Thornisms; here are just two...
"The Premier League is being brought all around the country, to England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales" Eh, Ireland...??

And also, when talking about the great Cliff Thorburn, "he (Cliff) still comes over, from time to time to the Crucible, every year"!

Brilliant! Love the Premier League and love your blog!

As i can see, Stephen scored more points than Ronnie here. And obviously, he was in the bunch, judging by the short red traces. Ronnie's run on the other hand was probably quite spectacular as we can see a couple of long puts, particularly on the blue. And look at that these masse shots on the cue ball!... Extraordinary... Obviously, Ronnie is a true artist on and off the table... :-)

I think Ding v Stevens and Selby v Doherty are the standout draws in the first round of the Grand Prix. I thought that it was to be a random draw though with the potential of seeds clashing from the off?

"They were created using snooker cues."

So, I guess Ronnie now will need yet another new cue??? ;-)

@jamie brannon - I picked the same two matches as highlights on my blog! ;-) Re draw: for the first round, it was the 16 qualifiers against the 16 seeds. From then on, it's an open draw without seedings.

Is it true that the Grand Prix is going to be shown on TV in Cambridgeshire only?

I was hoping you'd post your views on the Grand Prix draw Dave.

I see worldsnooker.com have finally copied your story, although they don't seem to have noticed the exhibition they are advertising ended yesterday!

Back to the artwork, i feel that Ronnie's work shows a tortured soul full of self doubt whilst Hendry's work shows a commitment and a positive frame of mind. Amazing what these pieces tell us about the artist.
